S 812. Prescription Drugs/Vote to Allow Importation of Less-Expensive but Identical Prescription Drugs from Canada.
senate Roll Call 179     Jul 17, 2002
Y = Conservative
N = Progressive
Winning Side:
Progressive

This vote concerned an amendment to a larger bill to bring prescription drugs to more seniors. The amendment made it easier to for pharmacists and wholesalers to import cheap prescription drugs from Canada, while also requiring Canadian firms that export drugs to register with the Department of Health and Human Services. Progressives supported the amendment as a way to get around the high cost of such drugs in the United States. The actual vote at issue here-also favored by Progressiveswas an amendment to this amendment. Both amendments were proposed by Dorgan (D-ND), and the second amendment simply required that any products found to be counterfeit or in violation of current law would be subject to an immediate import suspension. The final vote in favor of this addition-and the Progressive positionwas 69-30.
